Parent Reading Fair Academy
The purpose of this page is to provide parents with information and tips to help their child complete a reading fair project.
Below you will find important documents and forms and the Academy modules for several topics. I suggest you watch the Module 1 and 2 for sure, after that you can choose those specific to your needs or watch them all. Each video has tips or advice that may not be available in the other videos. PLEASE NOTE: The guidelines have changed this year. Make sure you understand the changes!

*** A couple of things about these modules.... I am sorry.... I am LOOOOOOONG winded. Ask your kids!! They know! Also, due to some computer difficulty, I was not able to edit these videos as I wanted to. My goal was to get them uploaded as quickly as possible so that you could use them to assist your child.
By watching these videos and using the materials here you agree that:
•K-2nd grade may only participate in FAMILY category for FICTION .
•Unfortunately, a student who does not have adult help and completes a project individually in those grades may be at a disadvantage.
•1st and 2nd grade will be scored together in one category.
•If more than one student in the family is in K-2nd they may complete a project together, but must enter in the level of the oldest child.
•Other grade levels must complete an individual or group project. Family is K-2 only.
•Please note- 3rd grade is judged individually for fiction only. For non-fiction they are judged with 4th and 5th grade projects.
By watching these videos and using the materials here you agree that:
- you understand the official guidelines above should be read and used above all else.
- using these videos/materials do not guarantee your child's project will win.
- the views expressed here are mine and are not endorsed by the MDE or HCSD.
- these videos are meant for MY students and MY parents and unfortunately I will not be able to assist students from other districts or schools.

|

Module 2: Definitions and Examples of Books
|
Est. Time- 8:23
This video will provide definitions of Literary Fiction, Narrative Non-Fiction and Informational Non-Fiction. It also includes some specific titles. These are only given as examples. Students are free to choose any title they wish as long as it falls within the guidelines. New for 2018- There is no longer a "Narrative Non-Fiction" thank goodness! These are meant only as examples and not suggestions. |
Module 3: Literary Fiction
|
Est. Time- 20:21
Narrative Non-fiction was FINALLY removed for 2018! This project type may be completed by any student in grades K-12 as an individual, group, or family project. Video includes photos of past projects. NOTE: These projects will have some of the old elements that should no longer be included. |
Module 4: Informational Non-Fiction Projects
|
Est. Time- 16:37
Informational Non-Fiction may be completed by students in grades 3 and up, but only as an individual project. Video includes photos of past projects. NOTE: These projects will have some of the old elements that should no longer be included. See the file below for more on graphic organizers. |

Module 5: Tips from a Judge
|
Est. Time- 21:30 (my long-windedness in action)
In this video, I share my tips from over a decade of experience as a reading fair judge. These are my opinions and are not endorsed by the Mississippi Reading Fair, or the Mississippi Department of Education. You and your child should make your own decisions regarding design. Following these tips does not guarantee placing in the reading fair. |
